In the times of necropolitics, resistance in worldmaking practices entails valuing the underground; subcultures and the force of the dead, who deserve to be mourned, while they offer us the impetus and stand by us – at times in unexpected ways. Queer Encounters, the motto of the 20-years of iQt, will engage with these themes in this initial event. Inspired by the fantastic creatures, worlds, and filmic narratives of Naomi Rincón-Gallardo, we ask: Are underworlds sites of collective encounters and shared desires, where social, technological, planetary, cosmological worlds turn porous?
Feel free to come in drag, looking for queer encounters in caves, compost, mushroom myceles, or other underworlds.
(Under)worldmaking // Hechura de (infra)mundos (Temblores Publicaiones, Mexico, 2025) is a publication on the most recent audiovisual projects (2017-2024) by artist Naomi Rincón-Gallardo, composed of narrative and sensorial assemblages that give shape to subworlds in subterranean cavities. The hybrid character that inhabit them – bearing feminine, masculine, animal, and vegetal traits – cry out for ways of relationality that affirm their re-existence and desire.
Propelled by that same drive, the authors who accompany us in this descent propose strategies such as invocation, counter-narrative, excess, chimeric dialogues, chant, and queer friendship, inviting us to immerse ourselves in their insubordinate temporality and in the porous, baroque making of these (under)worlds. In these journeys there is no moral lesson, but rather the persistence of the dead as active agents, with whom we sustain and make worlds, in a territory haunted by the expanding domain of necropower. With essays by Antke A. Engel, Óscar González, Laura G. Gutiérrez, Beatriz Lemos, Camila Marambio, Naomi Rincón-Gallardo, Itala Schmelz, Sayak Valencia.
