Neue Zukunft / Thu, 6 Nov

Mad Kate | The Tide – STAGE and BEDROOM record release show mixes queer performance, rage, care, heart, cunt, gut and punk rock After five years in the making, Mad Kate the Tide emerge with their second studio LP, Stage and Bedroom, which reflects the complex conditions of labour and care, the very ones they lived through in order to finally give birth to the work. These songs and performances are about freelance WORK, the hustle, and how we are connected as laborers in capitalism to the mechanisms of WAR. Its also about the sexualized body in and out of sex work — what we do in the bedroom and what we do on the world stage … and why our bodies are always instruments of power in the bed and in the streets and in the world

Mad Kate | The Tide is a post-punk conceptual performance project featuring Jacopo Bertacco aka The Tide on guitar, loops, and electronics, Mad Kate on vocals, poetry, contact mics, and performance, and Sara Neidorf on drums. Rooted in conceptual inquiry and text-based explorations, Mad Kate | The Tide weaves dynamic sonic landscapes of punk, acoustic folk, psychedelic rock, and spoken word. Their performances blend raw honesty with darkly provocative movement and performance art, designed to challenge and stir audiences.

In their first work – an album – a book – and performance – ALIVE:ness, they explore questions that permeate all their projects: To what extent are we truly present in each other’s lives—physically, emotionally, electronically, and even beyond life and death—within a landscape of virtual interaction and shifting identities? How do we define presence when our very existence is shaped by the way we engage both physically and digitally with those closest to us? What does it mean to queer identity in a globalized world, not only as an act of self-expression but as a strategy for community building and solidarity? These questions emerge in the sweaty bodies of the club

The evening will open with the juiciest band in town RATAS Shouty, sexy and a bit silly, combine them all in a post-punk feminist sound. Think Riot Grrrl meets Midwest Emo with a sprinkle of Punk.

”HYENAZ: ENTANGLEMENT” is a VR experience that invites participants to explore their own entanglements with objects, landscapes, and extractive processes, with HYENAZ as their guide. In a fantastical environment—immersed in soundscapes and textures recorded through HYENAZ’s slow-movement research project in sites of environmental extraction—objects reveal their animacy, and participants are invited to engage in speculative storytelling to deepen their understanding of interrelationality.

16 April 2025 – Mathematics of Work – Drag Resources Action Group Launch – Sophiensaele, Berlin

16.04 – Drag Resources Action Group Launch Party at Sophiensaele

At the Drag Resources Action Group Launch Party we launched our new guidelines for fair labor. The Drag Resources Action Group (D.R.A.G.) Berlin is a collective of drag artists and adjacent genres*, including performers, bookers, and event organizers, who have been advocating since October 2023 for better working conditions in one of the lowest-paid, most precarious, and socially vulnerable performance genres.

We have created these guidelines to establish basic standards and fair working conditions. To achieve this, we collaborate with drag venues, organizers, associations, and performers to build a better drag scene for everyone.

Mad Kate – The Mathematics of Work

Mathematics. If my average gig is €50, thats 8 gigs to make rent. 30 days in a month, that’s 720 hours. Sleep 6 hours a night, though I know I need 8 to be sane— still that’s 180 hours a month
asleep. 720 hours minus 180 thats 540. 8 hours per performance, 1 for getting there, 1 for sound check, 1 for makeup, 1 for getting into costume, 1 for a pre-performance stretch, 1 for food, 1 for
the actual performance and 1 to pack down — for 8 gigs — that’s 64. So 540 hours minus 64 equals 476 hours left in the month. Per performance I need: 8 times 8 hours for 8 concepts. Thats 8 times 8 hours for 8 costumes, 4 hours times 8 musical tracks, 4 times 8 performances of absolute minimal rehearsal time That’s 192 hours of preparation. Bare minimum. 476 minus 192 equals 284. Then I’ve got an hour each performance for writing my bills — that’s 8 hours. Remind them again. Promotion. Promote myself, promote the show — that’s 2 hours per show, let’s say, so that’s 16
hours. That’s 260 hours left. Eat 3 meals a day, take as little time as possible, I should either eat out (faster) or cook (slightly longer, costs less). Go to the shop. That would be 3 times 30 equals 90 meals. 15 minutes for buying or preparing food, 15 minutes for eating. 30 minutes times 90 meals equals 45 hours.

That’s 215 hours left. There’s about 4 hours per month to go shopping — that’s 211. My child, care split between 3 coparents? That’s 10 days a month. 1 hour to school, 1 hour for pickup, 2 hours to spend with them on reading, appointments, or studying — that’s 40 waking hours. That’s 171 hours left. Exercise! An average of 30 minutes a day — another 15 hours. That’s 156 hours left. But what about a doctor’s appointment or therapy — 2 maybe 4 fours. But thats just my rent. I need €150 for KSK, €200 for food, €50 for costumes. Thats another €400 if I live off €800. Sure. Minimal. Take a day job, 40 hours at €10 an hour — I’ve still got 110 hours per month. That’s an extra 3.6 hours a day I haven’t yet allocated. That’s to use for freetime — like seeing friends or seeing a gig or being an activist or just getting a sleep-in or putting my child to bed or. I don’t know. It’s all quite possible. But I can’t take 1 flight home. And I can’t have 1 emergency. I can have 0 things happen to me. And I can’t have 1 thing happen to my child. I will be strict about everything. Buy nothing. Buy nothing day and buy nothing every day nothing day. Mathematics.

Signals explores the notion of performativity in the form of codes, signs, drag, and masks in order to emerge from the darkness as visible.

Signals become methods of translation, channels through which our voices become audible and understood. Bodies emerge into forms which are recognized and codified; modes through which we can be understood and called into subjectivity. An audio work and a video essay, Signals explores the process of emergence especially as it relates to the a/Artist into cultural spaces of power, those who hold or desire to hold the microphone.

Using multiple distinct voices and perspectives, both sung and written, Signals explores the process through which one emerges through the implementation of signals like masks, codes, dress, and language in order to achieve audibility, visibility and thus access. What is this process of emergence? Who stands at the gate? What is gained and lost in this process?

HYENAZ create all their sound works from original field recordings; the particular context for these recordings were an anarcha-feminist anti-military conference which brought together activists from throughout and beyond Eastern Europe and central Asia. Together the members of the conference struggled to bridge knowledges, contexts and experiences. HYENAZ want to especially thank the voices and brave activists who were present there.

Signals is the 4th audio visual work in Foreign Bodies, commissioned by Sound Scene Festival, Washington DC in 2021, with support from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities and the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Goethe Institut.

    Truth or Dare

    Do you remember the lockdown?

When disembodied dancefloors were craving for bodies?
Where should we take our longing?
Where should we take our desire?
Where should we take our flesh?

    Screenings

05.04.2025 Berlin Achtung Berlin Film Festival
    14.04.2025 Porn Film Festival Vienna

Inspired by the feeling of loneliness and longing during the first Covid lockdown, the experimental documentary „Truth or Dare“ begins. From interviews, that were conducted over a distance unfolds a fragmentary narration by people from different parts of the world who all came to Berlin to find a home and belonging here in the queer sex-positive scene. It’s about the discovery of queer bodies, the need for consent and the struggle for awareness of self-determined sex work.

As we glide through nocturnal Berlin and deserted clubrooms, we hear sirens singing and luring us in. The voices of different people are telling their stories, yearning for freedom, recognition and belonging.

The protagonists take us into their private spaces. We hear them talking about their desires and boundaries. We feel how they relate to each other by the way they speak and touch: It’s the playful, tender and animalistic aspect of sexuality. As a couple and in a group. And why all that?

“When you see birds flying together in a flock, there is a loss of control and a loss of ego for the bird who is flying in that majestic way with all the other birds.
People go on roller-coasters to feel that loss of control and people sing in choirs, because we want to feel part of something.“
