SOUND DESIGN and LOCATION RECORDING

Mad Kate, often in collaboration with Adrienne Teicher, and/or with their project HYENAZ, creates sound design and post-production for film, theater, radio, audiobooks, and podcasts, offering both on-set and studio recording services. They each bring a unique blend of audio-technical expertise, musicality, and performance experience to every project. Their approach is process-based and holistic, treating sound as an integral element of the film or live visual performance from the moment of location recording. By working directly with actors and incorporating site-specific recordings, they craft immersive soundscapes that emerge organically from the world of the piece—whether grounded in realism or reaching into the fantastic.

With experience both behind and in front of the camera, Mad Kate and Adrienne Teicher are particularly suited to projects requiring sensitivity and artfulness. As sound designers they bring a deep awareness of the needs of audio post-production while capturing sound on set, ensuring a seamless and intentional auditory experience.

The Visual Feminist Manifesto

Directed by Farida Baqi with sound design and original scoring by HYENAZ

Syria, Lebanon, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, 2025

From the IFFR Premiere, written Olivia Popp:

Expressing desire, pursuing dreams, loving oneself, questioning the oppressive confines of patriarchy. Farida Baqi takes us on a lyrical and emotional journey through the life of a young woman from birth to adulthood in an unnamed Arab city.

The moment of birth, the possibilities of childhood, the growing pains of teenage years, the expectations imposed by society on young women: The Visual Feminist Manifesto explores how a woman’s life is crafted by the world around her. We are witness to the ways in which she makes meaning, both from her personal experience and how she is told she must behave, both deeply shaped by patriarchal structures. Repeatedly told that women are “less than”, her behaviour is made small by the threats of shame, fear, and ostracisation. All the while, she is seeking something more emancipatory.

Farida Baqi brings us into the fold through the life of an unnamed woman in an Arab city, homing in on the experience of a cisgender woman making encounters with heterosexual desire. But the filmmaker’s ode will resonate with many, united through universal emotions of joy, pain, love, and frustration.

Contrasting shots depicting the urbanity of an Arab city and the gentle scenery of the seaside, Baqi makes a woman’s life inextricable from the spaces and places around her, all the while hinting at a more liberatory future forged through solidarity.

Against the Current: The Umoⁿhoⁿ, Francis La Flesche, and His Collection

The exhibition is the result of an extensive process in which a group of Umoⁿhoⁿ people told the story of their lives and culture, their past and present. The exhibition is conceived as a circle of stories—there is no beginning and no end. An integral part is a 7-channel film installation in which 22 individual sequences are assembled by an algorithm into ever new combinations. By focusing not only on the objects, but above all on today’s people and their stories, the exhibition aims to create new perspectives on Native American culture and history. More Information here

ECLIPSES: Glitters of Darkness

ECLIPSES, a performancy by Nagi Gianni & ReveRso & Yotta Baka for Chrysalis!

CHOKEHOLE: Drag Wrestlers do Deutschland

One hot summer night in New Orleans a drag collective staged wrestling night. They dressed up as their vibrant alter-egos, and proceeded to beat the living daylights out each other while the audience collectively lost their shit. That night, Chokehole was born. This documentary follows Chokehole as they take the show to Germany, sharing the stories of cast members as they grapple with racism, gender conformism, queer identity and America’s suppression of the arts.

The film depicts the artists both with and without drag, sharing their larger-than-life and theatrical alter egos while displaying the unique vulnerabilities that lie behind the character. This film explores their loud, vibrant personas alongside their heart-breaking personal stories, and the adversity they’ve had to overcome to be accepted in the US. As the documentary progresses, we learn how each character copes with love, sex, transitions, post-trauma, and socioeconomics while offering a glimpse into their fantastical, vivid world… which is as much an escape for the artists as it is for the audience.

“Chokehole: Drag Wrestlers do Deutschland” is the story of how disenfranchised, queer performers defeated all the odds to make a compelling theatrical show

Like Lovers Do: Memoirs of Medusa

Like Lovers Do: Memoirs of Medusa by Sivan Ben Yishai, Suhrkamp
Sound Design and Post production for audio book by HYENAZ

In the myth, Medusa is raped by the god of the seas, whereupon she transforms into a winged figure with serpentine hair, the sight of which turns everyone to stone. Medusa’s violent, kaleidoscopic memoirs are a dedication to all lovers in Sivan Ben Yishai’s work, listing moments of our collective memory: between desire and violence, between porn and sexual fantasies, between political attacks and familial practiced looking away. In an only apparent counter-scenario, five young girls together imagine the dream man of their future, themselves involuntarily as the perfect attribute at his side. On a third narrative track, the author designs a literal reversal dynamic of the traditional narrative patterns: A woman grabs a knife, leaves the crime scene of the marriage bed, hijacks a crowded bus, and puts it in reverse to collect and decompost the century story lines and all the bruised human love meat. Couldn’t it become humus for an eco-sphere of feminist narratives?

Unsere Stadt aus Vogelaugen / Eine Blutung im Dunkeln

Unsere Stadt aus Vogelaugen / Eine Blutung Im Dunkeln
Text and performative reading by Sivan Ben Yishai
Sound design and live performance by HYENAZ

On the square of the Old Synagogue, today’s Opernvorplatz, Sivan Ben Yishai recalls in her text the destruction of the synagogue on the Hiltropwall. She draws an arc from the past into the future and up to the new start of the theater. As a path through the city of Dortmund, this text was created as a commissioned work for the city walk “2170 – What will have been the city in which we will live?” at Theater Dortmund.

Berliner Morgenpost: The Year’s Best Theater Productions

Eight women are rehearsing in a military camp, preparing for the mission, the war. They talk and they dream about it, at night on their rusty bedsteads with their thin mattresses. The Israeli author Sivan Ben Yishai condenses the waking dreams and memories of these women into a many-voiced, urgent text, in whose linguistic force director Sasha Marianna Salzmann trusts without reservation. From a loose linking of voices, bodies and sound, associative fields emerge on stage that form battlefields in the minds of the audience.

Instinct

INSTINCT is a film that germinated in 2013 and was finally completed in 2019, a collaborative project between Mad Kate, Adrienne Teicher, Marit Östberg, Ester Martin Bergsmark and Jasco Viefhues. INSTINCT is about the queer imaginary; a queer love/crusing story where possibilities emerge for imagining our own bodies differently, sharing bodies, and exploring bodies that we might only be in our fantasies. In these dreams we find possibilities to connect with each other beyond bodies and see in each others’ bodies in our/their fluidities and queerness.
